Morgan County High School announced this year’s STAR Student and Teacher at a special assembly last Friday. Senior Will Paschal earned the prestigious title of STAR Student. He then chose Pam Hooten, his math teacher, as this year’s STAR Teacher.

Paschal earned the honor by excelling academically, known as the resident math whiz at MCHS. To be named a STAR Student, graduating high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students in their class based on a grade point average.

While Pascal has excelled across the board academically, math is his favorite subject.

“Your mind is so curious and you know how to really go after things,” said Hooten to Pascal.

Pascal chose Hooten as the teacher who has inspired and influenced him the most during his time at MCHS. Hooten served as STAR Teacher in 2018 and was named Teacher of the Year in 2016.

Pascal will study mathematics when he goes to college this fall. He is still deciding on which college to attend, but is leaning toward Georgia Tech.

“I am considering my options,” said Pascal.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, now in it’s 62nd year, is sponsored, administered, and promoted by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and PAGE Foundation. According to the STAR program, “Since its creation, the STAR program has honored nearly 27,500 students and the teachers they have selected as having had the most influence on their academic achievement.”

“STAR begins each year in participating high schools throughout Georgia when the STAR Student is named and chooses a STAR Teacher to share in this recognition. The students and their teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from one of the more than 170 statewide civic organizations and businesses that serve as local sponsors of the STAR program,” said a press release from the STAR program.

The Morgan County Kiwanis Club sponsored MCHS’s STAR program.

Pascal will now compete for region honors in the program. Region winners compete for the honor of being named State PAGE STAR Student. STAR Teachers continue on with their students at every level of the program.

“The Professional Association of Georgia Educators honors outstanding students and educators, and encourages academic excellence through competitive programs such as PAGE STAR, the PAGE Academic Bowl of Middle Grades, ad the PAGE Georgia Academic Decathlon,” said a rep from the STAR program.
