Morgan County’s wrestling team finished up their final tournament of the regular season competing in the Archer Invitational. The tournament is the final preparation for Coach Marcus Crowe and Coach Carter Shultz as they look toward this coming weekend’s Area Tournament at Jefferson High School.
Shultz said, “I was very excited for the most part on how we performed Saturday. This tournament is a good jump start into the post season run to State. I thought we let a couple matches slip, but overall I thought we wrestled pretty well.”
Junior Griffin McAlister took first place in the 120 pound weight class and is looking for a strong Area Tournament performance. “Griffin is really starting to wrestle well, winning 10-6 to avenge a couple previous losses to Greater Atlanta Christian’s (GAC) Na’im Moss (a two-time State placer)in the semifinals before winning 3-1 on a last second takedown in the finals. He is really starting to get some pace and embracing the attacking mentality I want our kids to carry. He couldn’t find a better time to start getting hot and I’m very excited to watch him as he battles to get on the podium. Junior 132 pounder Brandon Grindle and Sophomore HWT (Heavyweight) Chance Reid both turned in another steady performance as they continue to get better every week.”
Top finishers for the Mat Dogs included:
113- Reba Hall (6th)
120- Griffin McAlister (1st)
126- Austin Johnson (5th)
132- Brandon Grindle (6th)
195- Jeremiah Grimsley (8th)
HWT- Chance Reid (5th)
The Area Traditional Tournament (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) will determine who will represent Morgan at the Sectional Traditional Tournament the following weekend at Pike County (Feb. 7-8). The top four wrestlers from each weight class will advance to the Sectional Tournament.
