Seniors of 2020,

On behalf of the Morgan County Board of Education and the nearly 500 employees in the Morgan County Charter School System, I want to say “Congratulations!” on your momentous achievement. High school graduation is an important milestone in your life, and I hope you are taking time to enjoy the moment!

Leaving Morgan County High School with a high school diploma is a very special day for you and your family.  Numerous adults have worked tirelessly to help you achieve this moment.   Alex Haley, an American writer and the author of the book Roots: The Saga of an American Family, wrote, “Anytime you see a turtle on top of a fence post, you know he had some help.” The support you have received from all aspects of this school system and community has been significant in helping you reach your milestone.

The next chapter of your life is beginning. You will leave the Morgan County High School campus as alumni.  The celebrations which occur this weekend represent the importance your family places on your accomplishment.  However, Monday morning will come, and you will begin the next chapter in your life.  Begin this journey with CONFIDENCE that you are prepared.  Your ACADEMIC FOUNDATION has been built.  Use this foundation as the building block for your future endeavors.  Be prepared to seek WISDOM and ADVICE of those who have traveled this road.  Be REFLECTIVE on what stirs your soul and spirit.  Define what SUCCESS will mean for you and dive into this chapter with excitement and anticipation.

The class of 2020 will be my final graduating class, and the memories of this year will abound in my thoughts and emotions for a long time. And, YES the year has been a doozy.  We would have never imagined that your graduating year would be smothered through the eyes of a school shutdown due to Covid 19.  I pray that we appropriately honored you through this most challenging time.  We took planning your graduation very personal and intentionally attempted to provide an extra type of recognition. I appreciate your understanding and the support of your family as we focused on this special moment.  Enjoy your individual graduation moment and your final stroll through the hallway.

Again, I wish you success.  The little things in life will help set the foundation for your greatness!

Congratulations on your graduation from Morgan County Charter School System.

For the last time,

Dr. James Woodard
