A Morgan County resident apparently shot himself while Morgan County Sheriff’s Office investigators were attempted to execute a probation violation warrant on the man in an Oconee County residence.
According to Lt. Brandon Sellers, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Edgar Franklin Cape, 48, Madison was found with a gunshot wound to the head in a bathroom closet at a Hillsboro Road, High Shoals residence while deputies were trying to clear the residence. Cape was transported to an Athens hospital but died on Friday, June 26, said Chief Deputy Keith Howard, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.
Sellers said investigators arrived at the Hillsboro Road residence at approximately 11 a.m. to serve the probation warrant. At the residence, he said, a man exited the residence and eventually told investigators that Cape was inside. The man also said his 15-year-old son was in the house.
Deputies told the man to get his son. “They wanted to make sure the homeowner and sone were safe,” Sellers said.
The man, Sellers said, went back into the house and within five minutes exited the house with his son. The man, an incident report states, told investigators that Cape appeared unwilling to come out and may harm himself.
“He came out and said, ‘he’s going to shoot himself.’ “
Within a minute, investigators heard a gunshot. Reports state that investigators then called Oconee County Sheriff’s Office for backup before entering the house. After they entered, reports state, they located Cape alive in the bathroom closet. A .45 caliber pistol was found on the floor under Cape’s hip.
