A Madison man died tragically last week in a motorcycle wreck during a brief but violent rainstorm.
According to Georgia State Patrol reports, Elman Norman, 40, died of injuries sustained in a Thursday, July 30 incident. Reports state that a 2005 Honda motorcycle struck the driver’s side door of a 2007 Ford F-150 as the F-150 was attempting to make a left turn from Fairgrounds Road southbound onto Eatonton Road.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:40 p.m. The 78-year-old driver of the truck told an investigating trooper that after he stopped at the stop sign on Fairgrounds Road it was “raining heavily and his sight distance was limited.” The man told the trooper that as he pulled onto Eatonton Road to make the left turn he then saw the motorcycle strike his door. He also said he never saw a headlight coming toward him prior to the crash.
Norman was taken from the scene to Athens Piedmont Hospital were he died that evening, GSP reports state.
The impact occurred at the intersection of Fairgrounds Road and Eatonton Road. A trooper noted that a tag light and tail light on the Honda appeared to be functioning but the headlight was not illuminated.
The investigating trooper also noted that emergency vehicles had to “slow down due to the amount of rainfall, causing sight distance to be limited.”
The trooper said enroute to the incident he drove through a rainstorm that reduced his “visibility to approximately 50 feet…”
No citations were issued in the incident, however, the incident has been turned over to the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) for review.
