James Walter Boyd, Jr. (82) of Rutledge died September 3, 2020. Mr. Boyd was a native of Atlanta. He was born August 5, 1938, to James Walter Boyd, Sr. and Lola Mae (Manard) Boyd. After high school, he attended Georgia State. He was married to Phyllis Rothell Boyd for almost 59 years. In 1968, they moved to Morgan County where he began working for the W.S. Gardner Insurance Agency. He then formed the Jim Boyd and Associates Insurance Agency. Mr. Boyd was a member of First United Methodist Church of Madison.
He was active in civic, veteran’s, and professional organizations including Kiwanis, VFW, IIAG (Independent Insurance Agents of Georgia), and SecureRisk (of which he was a founding member). He was a staunch supporter of numerous community organizations including the Morgan Medical Center, the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, and the Madison Historical Society and was honored to be on the board of directors at the Bank of Madison. He will be remembered as a community- minded patriot and an avid outdoorsman.
Mr. Boyd is survived by his wife, Phyllis, and children, Donna Kathleen Boyd and James Benjamin Boyd (Karoll). He leaves two grandchildren, Kyle Boyd and Gabrielle Boyd. He is also survived by his brother Donald Manard Boyd and six cousins.
A private graveside service was held Sunday, September 6, at Madison City Cemetery with the Reverend Grady Mosley of First United Methodist Church of Madison officiating.
A celebration of Mr. Boyd’s life will be held later.
