In the age of the coronavirus, it is not only people’s physical health at risk, but their mental health as well. Between economic hardships, shutdowns, quarantines and separation from loved ones while the world wrestles with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, depression and other mental health issues are on the rise. Local Madison City Councilwoman Carrie Peters Reid and Reasha Daniels, of Pretty Girls Fitness are orchestrating a virtual 5K race to get people outdoors exercising and to raise awareness about mental health in the local community.

“No, it’s not Mental Health Month, but the need for mental health awareness is at an all time high,” said Reid. “We are isolated or quarantined, our livelihood is being threatened because of COVID-19. Spread Love ministries teamed up with Pretty Girlz Fitness, led by Reasha Daniels, because exercise helps our mental health.”

The First Annual Mental Health Virtual 5K will commence this weekend, from Friday Sept. 25 to Sunday, Sept. 27.

“A virtual race is a race that can be run (or walked) from any location you choose!” explained Reid.  “You can run, jog, or walk around your block, on a trail, on a treadmill, at the gym track, etc. You get to run your own race, at your own pace, and time it yourself! We encourage you to pray for those struggling with mental health and our nation as you run or walk.” Participants are asked to post their result of the 5K to the Facebook page over the weekend.

The registration fee to participate is $20. All proceeds from the virtual 5K will go to support the National Alliance for Mental Health. There will be first, second and third place awards. Everyone who registers will receive a free T-shirt.

Reid thanked all the sponsors who made this 5K race possible.

“Thank you to the sponsors: Madison Realty,  Agape  Occasions, LLC, Patricia Bishop Simmons, Coles Peters, Zion Covenant Fellowship Church, Jeremy‘s Wing Shack , Mandrell’s Shut Up and Race, Angela Peterson, The Junction Agency, Lucy Lord, Re/Max, and Sherry Terrell.
