Fall is in full swing, making the local scenery the perfect subject for local artists to paint. Dozens of Georgia artists will be painting at various outdoor locations, including in Madison, for the annual Georgia Color Plein Air Competition from Thursday, Oct. 22 through Sunday, Oct. 25.
“Georgia’s top recognized masters of plein air from Ellijay to Savannah and in between, will converge on the local scenery of Georgia’s Historic Heartland as they paint the local scenery during the second Georgia Color Plein Air Competition,” announced Olmsted Arts of Eatonton. “Georgia Color Plein Air* presented by Olmsted Arts in partnership with the Artisans Village Guild, Eatonton, GA, celebrates the tradition of outdoor painting with 26 of the finest outdoor painters in Georgia. Artists will put brush to canvas, capturing the autumn light over the waters and fields of Georgia’s Historic Heartland region. The Georgia Color Artists will bring a fresh eye to the changing lights and colors, and a variety of styles that draw from the rich traditions of plein air painting.”
Georgia Color Sponsors include the Madison Artists Guild and the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art. Georgia Color is a juried event, with artists competing.
“Fresh works will be available for purchase each day. Featured Artists will hold back two paintings at the Awards Event on Saturday evening where a panel of Judges will award prizes. Awards Event attendees will have the first opportunity to purchase paintings before the public exhibition on Sunday,” said a spokesperson for Olmsted Arts.
According to Olmsted Arts’ website, “En plein air is a French expression that means ‘in the open air.’ It is used by artists to describe the art of outdoor painting, capturing landscapes and views in natural light. This kind of art has been a popular practice for centuries and requires specific skills and techniques. The mission of Olmsted Plein Air is to nurture the visual and cultural art education and experience through the art of plein air painting. We execute this mission through events, workshops, lectures and demonstrations by some of the most esteemed Artists in the USA.”
The group hopes to capture this moment in time in the created paintings of the artists.
“We are pleased to present Georgia Color. At the center of the modern plein air movement, Georgia Color is making and documenting history. The work produced here has importance beyond the daily joy of seeing original artwork in your home,” said a spokesperson for the event. “We invite you to experience the vibrancy and artistic excellence of Georgia Color and to be a part of the history being made here.”
There are free and ticketed events throughout the week for art enthusiasts of all ages, including daily artist demonstrations, Welcome Event, Collectors Preview and Awards Celebration. “Learn from daily demonstrations by the Georgia Color Judges, award winning artists, and knowledgeable collectors. Relax with music, food and great ART at our Welcome Reception and Awards Celebration,” said the press release for the event.
