The juggernaut that is the 2020 Morgan County High School Spike Dog volleyball team defeated third ranked Lafayette High School Tuesday night to advance to the Final Four of the AAA State Volleyball Championship.

Morgan, ranked fourth in the state in AAA, defeated the third ranked LaFayette team 3-1. The win sets up a noon semi-final game against Sandy Creek High School. The match will be played at Morgan County High School this Saturday, Oct. 31. Tickets are $8 at the door.

LaFayette won the first match 25-20 but after that it was all Morgan County. The Spike Dogs took the next three matches 25-14; 25-21 and 25-22.

Brooke Butler led the team in kills with 14. Presley Hill had eight and Mackenzie Pitzer had seven.

Head Coach Kathleen Goodwin said Tuesday’s win was the culmination of team effort.

“The entire team played so well together to take down a very competitive LaFayette team. We had to play smart and look for holes in their defense. We served so strongly, too.”

Anna Cox and Addy Christian both had six aces in the match.

“In the end, I think our seniors and their experience on the court as well as the talent of the entire team contributed to the victory,” Goodwin said.

Saturday’s match at Morgan County is a “blackout” game, she said. The team is encouraging fans to wear black for the semi-final match.
