Jean Buller Berding

Staff Written Obituaries

Jean Mary Martha Buller Berding, 91 years old, of Madison. died peacefully on December 13, 2020. Jean was born July 17, 1929 in Cincinnati, OH to Martha Mary (Wirmel) and Clarence Henry Buller, Sr.

Raised in Cincinnati, the Catholic faith was the foundation of her life and education. Jean graduated from Mother of Mercy High School in 1947, Cincinnati. She was a member of St. James and St. Bernard (Cincinnati), St. Jude (Atlanta) and St. James (Madison) Catholic Churches.

Always respectful and caring of all life, she spent countless hours as a volunteer for the March for Life, Birthright, Meals on Wheels and was Volunteer of the Year for her contributions to Meals on Wheels in Madison.

In 1968 she helped form the Women’s Circle groups at St. Jude (Atlanta), was active in and became president of the Women’s Society of St. Jude the Apostle and was active in the Atlanta Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women. She was an active member in the Legion of Mary and recipient of The Woman of the Year Award from the Atlanta Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women.

She taught religious education at St. Bernard (Cincinnati), St. Jude the Apostle (Atlanta), and St. James (Madison). Jean was a sacristan at St James and honored as Woman of the Year from the Women’s Club at St. James.  Jean was active in numerous church events. In recent years she participated in the Marian Cenacle prayer group and faithfully supported the work of her husband, Deacon Bert.

Seeing the need to support the Latino and Hispanic communities in their Catholic faith, Jean and her husband were instrumental in starting the Spanish mass at St. James. Together they celebrated in many cultural religious festivities and made many friends.

For many years, she sang with volunteers at the local nursing home uplifting the spirit of the residents.

Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were primary in her life.  She attended as many activities and celebrations for all of her offspring as possible, even driving hours to see someone’s bit part in a play or sit on the bench at a sporting event. She loved exploring the wonders of nature on the farm and at local parks. By example Jean taught her children love of family, animals and an appreciation of the arts. Family Christmas gatherings at state parks were a highlight for many years.

Her beautiful, welcoming smile and joyful, gentle spirit will be missed by all.
