A 33-year-old Madison man died from multiple gunshot wounds Saturday at the Budget Inn, Eatonton Road.

According to Sgt. Wes Thompson, Madison Police Department, Alex Bernard Tolbert was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 8:45 p.m. after officers arrived following a concerned citizen’s 911 call. Thompson said Tolbert’s body was found just inside room 152 with multiple gunshot wounds. Thompson said authorities believe Tolbert was shot inside the room but, he said, no witnesses have come forward and no arrests have been made regarding the killing.

“We have a lot of rumors. We are tracking down multiple leads,” he said.

A witness at the scene told authorities that he heard seven gun shots.

The Madison Police Department called investigators with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to assist in the investigation. The area around room 152 was cordoned off and secured until approximately 7 a.m. Sunday morning as GBI Crime Scene Technicians worked the area. Thompson said a .22 caliber weapon was used in the shooting. The man that called 911, Thompson said, was standing outside the room and saw Tolbert’s body on the floor past a partially open door.

Tolbert’s body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.

Thompson said Tuesday that authorities continue to interview witnesses and are trying to find both a suspect and motive. He asked that if anyone has information pertaining to the shooting, go to the madisonga.com website and fill out an anonymous tip form or call Thompson at (706) 342-1275, extension 1314.

The murder marks the first time in more than a year that a person has been killed in Madison. In November 2019, a man was shot and killed at a Morgan Circle location.
