The Madison Mayor and City Council voted to increase the Hotel/Motel Tax from 5 percent to 7 percent at Monday’s regular meeting, just making the state legislature’s deadline in the nick of time. The measure passed narrowly in a 3-to-2 vote. On Jan. 7 a lost or misplaced items complaint was filed at a Seoned St., Bishop residence. According to reports, a woman said she had several items stored in a black purse in her bedroom that were now missing. Two fires raged in Morgan County just a couple of days before the New Year. On Saturday, Dec. 30, a single-family house on Brobston Lane went up in flames. The family was not home at the time of the fire, but the family’s pet pit bull was killed in the fire. “It was a sweet pit bull,” said Fire Chief Jeff Stone. A 22-year-old Rutledge youth has been charged with armed robbery after he allegedly pointed a pistol at a Hollis St. residence and demanded money. According to Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reports, Stanley Deneen Harris turned himself in to authorities at the Morgan County Public Safety Complex, Monticello Road, on Dec. 23, one day after he allegedly took $2,000 at gunpoint from a 29–year–old Rutledge man. According to reports, an employee reported that someone entered a vacant room and removed a 27” Vizio flat screen television set. The television is valued at $230.
