By Nick Nunn I know that I write about the weather and the changing seasons a little bit too much in my sport columns, but, sitting out at games, it really does make a huge difference in how much I am able to enjoy the experience. So, if you would, indulge me once more and then I’ll try to hold off on it for a while. For the past week or so, it has felt absolutely wonderful outside. It might just be that this is the time of year into …

Next up for the Dogs Morgan County High School Dogs vs. Oconee County Warriors Friday, Sept. 27, 7:30 p.m., Oconee County High School in Watkinsville By Nick Nunn, Staff Writer “Anticlimactic.” That’s how Morgan County’s Head Football Coach Bill Malone described the bye week that the team endured last week. And why not? Without a Friday night game to look forward to, the practices would become a set of endless drills before a night at the house. Still, the bye week served its purpose, and Coach Malone said that the team and coaches were …

The do’s and don’ts of hunting camps: Your checklist

Editor Alvin Richardson, Sports Leave a Comment

By Alvin Richardson Deer season is underway for the archery guys and just around the corner is opening day for the hunters who favor smoke poles (muzzle loaders) and traditional firearms. With that in mind I thought it an opportune time to send along a few tips about your hunting camp excursions. Many hunters like to attend these informal gatherings that meet mostly on weekends in some woods as far away from home as possible – kind of like a vacation if you will. These camps are paid for in …

For the JV girls, the second set was about sticking with North Oconee. They worked hard tying the set multiple times. However, the Titans eventually pulled …

Mad-town Skate-boys (and girls)

Editor Sports, Sports Columns Leave a Comment

By Nick Nunn A couple of weeks back, at a Madison City Council meeting, Chad Foster spoke to the council about the possibility of building a skateboard park at one of Madison’s existing parks. In broad terms, Foster outlined what a proposed skate park would require as far as construction, area and cost; noted that Rutledge and many cities near Madison already have skate parks; and repeatedly described skateboarding as a “safe” activity for individual athletes. It was only at that point – his insistence that skateboarding is safe – …

For the trophy-hunting outdoorsman, size matters

Editor Alvin Richardson, Sports Leave a Comment

By Alvin Richardson I caught my first trophy bass at around the age of six and I’ll never forget that day. The big fish hit a plastic worm that I was inexpertly dragging along the bottom of our small pond. The day had been slow to that point and my attention to detail had no doubt waned somewhat in the hot summer sun. A few minutes after the bass actually struck I realized the line was going sideways so I feverishly tightened up the line and set the hook. After …

Greene’s a wrap, now to Putnam

Editor Sports Leave a Comment

By Nick Nunn, Staff Writer From the very beginning, the Bulldogs’ 31-16 win over Greene County was a little rough around the edges. Including Greene County’s first attempt at a kickoff at the start of the game, the first five plays of the game resulted in a penalty. Three of those were against Morgan County, which resulted in a first-and-thirty-nine for the Dogs right off the bat. Fortunately, the Bulldogs were able to come together and pull themselves out of that deep yardage for a first down, but Morgan County …

By Nick Nunn, Staff Writer A couple of weeks back, I suggested that we all try to get out a bit more often to see more of the natural beauty of Georgia, beginning perhaps with the so-called seven natural wonders of Georgia. In order to minimize my sense of hypocrisy – oh, it is always there, I just try to push it as far back as possible most of the time – I decided that it wouldn’t kill me to get out last Saturday and go to the most accessible …
